Kaikoura

I am in Kaikoura now, a small coastal town a couple hours north of Christchurch. I first wanted to stay here for 3 nights though I am now here for over a week already. I have found a job at a motel where I have to clean the motel rooms. I have to admit, not the best job I have ever had but it's quite okay, the wage is pretty good compared to other backpacker jobs in NZ and the people are really nice.

Around Kaikoura you find  a lot of farmland, the Kaikoura Ranges and the Kaikoura Peninsula. The mountains and the sea are very close together and you have beautiful views wherever you look. Kaikoura is famous for whale and dolphin watching tours and for a great seal population around the town. Therefore, a lot of tourists are coming in summer to enjoy the attractions. There is a walk on the Kaikoura Peninsula where you can see many seals lingering on the rocks and swimming in the water. I have done the walk twice already. Once, I coincidentally met a German girl from the same hostel in Port Macquarie, Australia which was quite funny. The world is just so small! So we walked around the peninsula together. The second time, I did the walk with Britt from the Netherlands who stayed at the same hostel.

Besides the walk, I have also done a kayak tour on the sea which was quite cool. There is not much else to report as on most days I work and hang out with the people at the hostel or in a bar. In one of the bars I even had a bit of home when I drank a good German wheat beer. Many people here are staying on a long-term basis because they are working as well. So it is quite nice to stay at this place for a longer time. And now enjoy the pictures!
